Broadland Wineries is to install a new production line capable of processing 20 million cans per annum.
The short-run canning facility will open in January at its base in Cawston, Norfolk.
The supplier chose a short-run line as “from our own experience high minimum order quantities limit innovation in wine”, Broadland marketing director Liz Cobbold said.
It comes as the business’ on-the-go wine brand Minivino prepares to unveil a white sparkling wine in a tin next month. It launched a Sparkling Rose (10% abv) into 200ml cans earlier this year.
Broadland is also gearing up to debut “a number of wine and non-wine brands” in a canned format in early 2020, while Minivino’s 187ml plastic cups are set to move to rPET material.
“The summer has been a huge success for our Minivino brand – it has seen growth in sales of 201% over the last year, making it the fastest growing single serve brand in the market according to the latest Nielsen statistics,” said Cobbold.
“Canned wine overall is one of the growth areas in wine, with sales up 139% over the same period.”
In August, The Grocer revealed Broadland was eyeing a move into kombucha after launching a new arm of the business – called The Live Kindly Drinks Company – dedicated to low and no-alcohol products.
Broadland saw its profits surge by £1.7m to £2m for the 52 weeks to 31 March, while sales soared 11.6% to £70.6m.
