Andy Bond has called for the return of his former logistics director David Cheesewright one year after he departed to become Wal-Mart Canada’s chief operating officer.
Asda has not confirmed which role Cheesewright will take up, but spokesman Nick Agarwal said he would definitely be back later this year.
Agarwal said Cheesewright had wanted to gain additional experience in Canada, but it had always been his intention to return to the UK.
In his current position, Cheesewright heads Wal-Mart Canada’s 231 stores and five Sam’s Club wholesale outlets,
covering areas such as store development and logistics.
The news of Cheesewright’s return comes after Bond last week admitted Sainsbury could take Asda’s number two position this summer. Figures from ACNielsen Homescan found that in the 12 weeks to May 14, Asda’s market share had slipped from 17.7% to 17%, while Sainsbury’s slipped slightly to 15.9% from 16.1%. Asda is failing to make ground on Tesco, whose share has climbed to 30%.
Cheesewright is credited with revolutionising Asda’s trading and supply network after its purchase by Wal-Mart in 1999. He joined Asda’s grocery division in 1999 from Mars Confectionery, working with Wal-Mart to devise Asda’s pricing policy. He was deputy trading director before becoming logistics director in 2002.
Hollis Smallman has been appointed president of co-operative Scotmid, replacing John Cronan, who is retiring after 11 years. In this part-time position, Smallman will act as a link between the board of directors, chief executive and senior management team.
Michael Walsh has been appointed chairman of Glanbia. He replaces Tom Corcoran, who has retired as chairman and director. Walsh has been vice chairman of Glanbia’s board of directors since 1996. He is also chairman of Glanbia Co-operative Society, and director of the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society and of the Irish Dairy Board Co-operative.
Christian Robert will replace Edward Hopkin as director general of the International Dairy Federation. Robert was formerly MD for Europe at Bulmers Group. Hopkin is retiring from the federation.
