Free range egg supplier Chippindale Foods has become the latest business to sign up to the British Egg Industry Council’s British Lion Egg Products standard.
The move means 11 of the UK’s largest processed egg suppliers have signed up to the scheme, which now represents about 90% of all processed eggs sourced from the UK.
North Yorkshire-based Chippindale, which also supplies Lion shell eggs, can now provide British Lion-accredited eggs in liquid and boiled form to the food manufacturing and foodservice industry.
“We are extremely excited to gain Lion accreditation because it means we are offering our customers egg products that meet the highest food safety standards, as well as being able to meet the growing demand for Lion egg products,” said Chippindale general manager Claire Anderson.
“Our company ethos is about providing the highest quality British free range and organic egg products, so it was an easy decision for us to sign up to the British Lion processing standards.”
Andrew Joret, chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, said: “We’re so pleased to welcome Chippindale Foods as our newest Lion Egg Processor member. This is great news for users of egg products, whether retailers, food manufacturers or foodservice, who want to be able to source eggs that have been processed to world-leading standards of food safety.”
It follows warnings earlier this year by the BEIC that consumers were being misled by retailers into thinking all egg ingredients in own-label products produced in Britain were domestically sourced.
The findings prompted the body to launch a petition calling for retailers to ditch imported eggs in their supply chains and to label foods made with foreign eggs more clearly.
