Retailers are trying to woo Britain's large Polish community with seasonal fare.
Carp is the centrepiece in the Polish offer, as the fresh water species is traditionally eaten on Christmas Eve.
It is also expected to appeal to other eastern Europeans, for whom turkey is relatively unknown as a festive food. Morrisons and Sainsbury's plan to stock the fish, and it will go on sale just days before Christmas. Sainsbury's is putting carp from a French fish farm into 35 key stores.
A Morrisons spokeswoman said: "We sell fresh whole carp at £5.99/kg.
"It is available in all stores by customer order and will be stocked in areas where there are large Polish communities."
In the past it has been difficult to find carp on sale in the UK, and many anglers say Eastern Europeans turn to poaching from British rivers in the run-up to Christmas. An Environment Agency spokesman said this belief was not borne out by any prosecutions.
