The Co-operative Group has banned monosodium glutamate and certain food colourings from its own label products as part of its Shopping With Attitude campaign.
The ban covers 12 new colourings, which takes the co-op’s list of banned colourings in its own label products to 21.
The group set out its plans for a radical review of its own label range in 2004, after its research found that eight out of every 10 people were prepared to pay a little extra for their ethics.
