The Co-operative Group has become the first retailer to be awarded the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection’s new cruelty-free standard for its own label household products.
The group’s cosmetics and toiletry products already carry the BUAV humane cosmetics bunny logo.
The new award guarantees that none of its own label household products or ingredients have been tested on animals by the Co-op or its suppliers since 1997.
The Co-op supported National Cruelty Free Week this week by displaying signs about the new standard and by
running buy-one-get-one-free offers and other promotions.
Adrian Hill, brand policy and standards manager, said the group would continue to campaign on animal welfare issues and seek ways to reduce unnecessary animal testing.
He said: “Being the first supermarket to be accredited under the Humane Household Products Standard reinforces our commitment to responsible retailing.”
Lauren Bates, BUAV corporate relations manager, added: “The Co-op has shown it is possible to provide a wide range of quality and safe household products without animal testing.”
