The Co-op is extending its Newhouse distribution centre in east Glasgow in a £12m investment.
The new unit will sit adjacent to its existing 500,000 sq ft facility, just off the M8, which services more than 600 Co-op food stores throughout Scotland and northern England.
The convenience retailer said upgrading the depot will further improve its service to the existing stores and strengthens its core logistics operations in the regions.
It is also set to include de-kit facilities to optimise recycling opportunities. This means rather than making additional journeys, Co-op delivery vehicles can return to the depot from store with recyclable materials that can be emptied and readied for its next deliveries in the most efficient way, it said.
It has committed to using the new 47,585 sq ft warehouse until at least 2040.
“Co-op is committed to serving and supporting its communities and we work to ensure we deliver the products that our members and customers want and need, conveniently,” said Co-op distribution depot GM Andy Baird.
“We are delighted to have committed to the Newhouse site, and with the additional warehouse offering specialist facilities to support our operations, we are making sure we have the right distribution facilities in place to continue to deliver improved services and access to food conveniently for our communities now and in the future.”
The works are underway, with Luddon Construction building the site for Tulchan Developments in a joint venture with landowner Fusion Assets. The unit is a pre-let to Co-op and is expected to be handed over to the retailer in October.
It will involve the construction of a single-storey warehouse unit with a ground floor office and welfare facilities. The external site works provide car parking, washing and fuelling across seven acres.
