Compass Group has launched a new Fairtrade retail range in a bid to help famers in Uganda become more sustainable in the way they produce coffee and food crops.
The Eatfair range, which includes Fairtrade certified butter flapjacks, white choc chip cookies, Eccles cakes, chocolate brownies and lemon muffins, has been introduced at 800 sites.
The catering giant has pledged to donate 5p from the sale of every item to Eatfair foundation projects, which will equip farmers in the East African country with tools and seeds. They will also be educated in sustainable agricultural practices and taught about soil structure, fertility, erosion control, subsistence crop development and climate change.
“Compass is a proud supporter of Fairtrade and our commitment is to help farmers, workers and their families in developing countries improve their livelihoods and get a fairer deal for their products,” Ian Sarson, Compass Group managing director said.
“We are constantly seeking ways to develop the commitment and are delighted to introduce the Eatfair retail range this Fairtrade Fortnight.”
Ashish Deo, commercial director of the Fairtrade Foundation, added: “The new Eatfair range of products from Compass is a great example of an innovative way for a long term Fairtrade supporter to go beyond the standards.
“I am really pleased to see the combination of higher sales through a widely available dedicated product range and additional contribution to producers’ investment in improving agriculture. This will enable better producer impact and builds on Compass’ continuing efforts to promote Fairtrade.”
