Costa Coffee to reopen 40% of UK cafés for takeaways

• The chain has introduced a range of new safety measures including hand sanitiser stations and Perspex screens

• It has also added two-metre floor signs and created designated pick-up points

Costa Coffee is set to reopen 40% of its UK cafés by the end of this month.

The high street chain will be offering a takeaway service from 1,100 of its 2,600 UK stores.

Ahead of the reopening, the coffee firm has introduced a range of new safety measures including Perspex screens at counters, hand sanitiser stations and social distancing controls.

It has added two-metre floor signs both inside and outside stores and created designated pick-up points.

Costa has already reopened all its drive-thru locations, which have been equipped with specially adapted serving hatches through which items are lowered down to customers’ vehicles, ensuring a contactless collection.

“We’re delighted to be able to share the news that by the end of June 1,100-plus of our stores will reopen for take-away or delivery. We have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback we have received from our customers and are pleased to once again be able to serve them our signature, handcrafted coffee,” said Costa Coffee CEO Jill McDonald.

“Not only have we been working hard to reopen our stores, but our teams have also ensured that 8,400-plus Costa Express machines have been available to serve barista quality, machine crafted coffee to those in need of a fix.

“We have also continued to show our appreciation to key workers across the country and have successfully delivered over 861,000 ready-to-drink Costa Coffee cans and 1,200 coffee packs to those who deserve a well-earned coffee break.”
