DB Wines is setting itself up as a responsible-drinking ambassador with the September launch of its first reduced-alcohol brand, Sovio, aimed at women.
The company claims the semi-sparkling Spanish wine, available in Blanco (white) and Rosado (rosé), will be the first brand to be marketed as a full-flavour, full-aroma quality wine which, at 8% abv, contains 40% less alcohol than standard wines.
"Many women find that the alcohol strength of wine when they are drinking in bars, pubs and clubs is too high, which carries the risk of unwanted intoxication," said managing director Mark Beasley. "It is now possible to produce delicious, refreshing wine at reduced-alcohol levels while also maintaining wine integrity."
Earlier this year Tesco announced its plans to strengthen its range of low-alcohol wines, following a consumer survey in which 87% of respondents said that they would like a greater choice to be available.
