The decision to keep the Mediterranean bluefin tuna fishery open despite scientific concerns over its stability has been branded "a real disgrace" that could result in "biological bankruptcy" for the species.

Environmental campaign groups had called for a complete closure of the fishery to allow for its recovery. However despite scientific recommendations for a 2009 total allowable catch of between 8,500 tonnes and 15,000 tonnes, EC members this week agreed a quota of 22,500.

"The game is over - the ICCAT has missed its last chance to save the bluefin tuna from stock collapse," said Sebastian Losada, Greenpeace Spain Oceans Campaigner.

Greenpeace and the WWF both called for consumers, retailers and restaurants to boycott the species.

Although not widely sold in UK supermarkets, bluefin is sold through Billingsgate market into the foodservice trade.
