With exacting top French chef Jean-Christophe Novelli heading up the judging team for this year’s Ideas to Dine For! Awards, winners can be sure that their products really do stand up to scrutiny.
Sponsored by Food from Britain, the Ideas to Dine For! Awards celebrate food and drink excellence across 12 product categories, spanning food and drink types from crisps and snacks, dairy and fish to soft drinks and alcoholic drinks.
Winning products were chosen based on those that best met the four criteria of taste, added value, versatility and packaging. However, judges also took into account the quality of ingredients and the integrity used to make the products. The judges are also keen to stress that products were rated on their own merits, and not on the company’s size or marketing budget, to ensure that best quality shone through.
This year, the competition will also include the crowning of a Supreme Champion - to be selected from one of the category winners on Tuesday, March 21.
Novelli says: “I am thrilled to be involved with the competition, which I believe is a great way to promote the UK food industry, especially regional food and drink. It is important to recognise businesses with real passion, energy and drive, and these products demonstrate a commitment to innovation and industry standards.”
Winning products include organic rose sugar, piccalilli and vintage cider, with some companies winning for the first time and others repeating the success of previous years.
In the crisps and snacks category for example, Burts Potato Chips once again walked away with the top prize with its GOSH no-salt chips, which it says are cooked in sunflower oil to make them healthier. MD at Burts Jonty White says: “We are absolutely delighted to have been presented with the Ideas to Dine For! Award. The fact that we have won this award every year since its inception is testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.”
First time winner Inverawe Smokehouses took the honours in the fish category with its organic smoked salmon, which caught the judges’ eyes because of its time-honoured approach. The company has been perfecting its production process since 1977. The fish is cured and hung above oak-log fires and left to gently smoke for up to two days and nights. The company says it employs no timers to ensure that each fish is smoked to perfection, just a good understanding of the process.
This year the awards reduced the number of drink categories from three to two, with apples stealing the show. Chegworth Valley Juices took the top prize with its Cox & Bramley Apple Juice, while Lyme Bay Winery’s hand-made Vintage Cider won in the alcoholic category.
Novelli headed the judging team, comprising Robin Tapper of the National Farmers’ Union; Rose Prince, author and food writer for the Daily Telegraph; Joe Warwick, editor of Restaurant Magazine; Nicola Mallet from Speciality Food Magazine; Kirsty Grieve from Food from Britain; Graham Cassie from Waitrose and David Mulcahy from Compass Group.
The winners will be presented with their trophies on Monday, March 20, and all winning products will be on display throughout Food & Drink Expo.
