British specialist cheesemakers "could be forced out of business" by food preparation methods introduced to halt the spread of foot and mouth disease.
Dairy hygiene regulations currently state that cheesemakers in infected areas can use only pasteurised milk, but some famous cheese brands, such as Wensleydale and Single Gloucester, require raw milk as a constituent.
Producers argue that research shows the cheesemaking process kills the virus and they say the ban on raw milk is "ludicrous".
