Discount chain Lidl has been threatened with prosecution in Ireland over its failure to label some food products in English.
Consumer affairs director Carmel Foley claimed it was breaching EU guidelines and has threatened court action.
She was concerned, she said, about products with descriptions of their contents only in German. In one case, it was unclear whether the contents of a tin of herring were cooked or uncooked, and that raised public health concerns. Foley has sent samples of the offending products to the Irish Health and Safety Authority for analysis. She has been in contact with Lidl on the issue, but said: "They were not very forthcoming in their response."
She said she was also concerned about other products which carried descriptions of their contents in large German type, with much smaller, less obvious labelling in English.
