Tesco has started to share out the responsibilities of its marketing and property director Tim Mason, who is moving to the US next year to head the retailer’s convenience store business venture.
It has appointed Tesco Ireland’s chief executive officer Gordon Fryett as head of its property activities in the UK & Ireland, reporting directly to group CEO Sir Terry Leahy.
A spokesman said that Fryett’s new role was a “significant part of Mason’s responsibilities”.
Fryett has been CEO of Tesco Ireland since 2001.
During his time in the role, he led the expansion of its network to 92 stores including the first Extra at Clare Hall, Dublin, and the launch of Express c-stores in the Republic.
Tesco Ireland property and supply chain director Tony Keohane replaces Fryett.
Keohane is a native of Cork and has been a director of Tesco Ireland since the division was formed in 1997.
He started his career in 1978 as a store manager at a number of Quinnsworth stores, and became a regional manager in 1981. In 1987 he was appointed a stores director and was appointed to the Quinnsworth board of directors in 1995.
Tesco’s trading and commercial director Richard Brasher is widely tipped to take over the marketing functions of Mason’s role.
