Tesco is going super-sized in the fruit and veg aisle with the launch of a giant avocado.

Torres avocados are three times as big as conventional medium-sized avocados, and can weigh as much as 1kg. The first fruit started rolling out to Tesco stores last week and are sold under Tesco’s Finest range, priced at £1.50 each. 

Tesco buyer Weronika Szala said Torres was an “exciting variety”, which would add further choice for customers. 

Mark Everett, avocado product manager at importer Worldwide Fruit, said the avocados had a relatively small stone, giving consumers great value for money. “They are perfect for a spectacular prawn cocktail or a super-sized, super-tasty portion of guacamole,” he said.

Torres avocados are grown in the Tucuman rainforest in Argentina, and will be on sale in Tesco until December.
