New compostable packaging that is claimed to reduce the amount of waste in the fruit supply chain goes into production next month.
The Resolve fruit pad, developed by packaging company Sirane, is targeted at the berry and soft fruit sector and is designed to reduce the level of damaged berries and soft fruit arriving at retail stores.
The pads cushion the fruit, absorbing excess moisture or juice and protecting against fruit damage. They were designed in response to retailer calls for more reliable and environmentally friendly packaging to replace bubble wrap and paper products, said Sirane director Simon Balderson.
"When the retailer sells high quality soft fruit, the product has to be guaranteed as exceptional - and without blemish or degradation," said Balderson.
The packaging had been well received by retailers, said Balderson, adding that Sirane was in discussions with major multiples interested in using the material.
