Higgidy has hired Megan Welch as its first sustainability manager.
Welch previously worked as environmental engagement and behaviour change manager for Kent County Council.
She had “an extensive background in sustainability”, said Higgidy, having also held roles at Virgin Atlantic, where she worked on an onboard recycling programme and the launch of the first commercial flight using sustainable aviation fuel made from recycled gases.
Prior to that she was a sustainability specialist at Canon.
”Now more than ever before it is the responsibility of the business sector to help make a positive difference to our planet,” said Higgidy CEO Rachel Kelley. “Appointing Megan as our new sustainability manager will allow us to set ambitious targets to help us move from a good place to a great place when it comes to reducing our environmental impact.”
Higgidy was “a brand that I have always admired”, said Welch, adding her main focus would be ”working cross-functionally” to “understand the key sustainability themes that are important to us, encouraging them to come up with their own ideas, as well as providing direction and focus in the form of our new strategy”.
That new strategy would be detailed in an upcoming impact report, she added.
It comes as the brand, which won B Corp certification last year, plans to switch its six-inch quiche range from plastic to paper cases, having last year done so for its little quiches, and plans to move its pies from plastic trays to foil cases.
It is currently splashing £10m on expanding and developing its Shoreham base with the addition of new productions kit and office space, with an eye to doubling its revenues by 2027.
It also hopes to make 75% of its range vegetarian or vegan by the end of the year.
