Marks & Spencer has chosen David Hordle to co-ordinate the project management of its new Plan A environmental initiative.
Hordle, who previously looked after M&S's health strategy for food and was also a category manager for its food division, will now be responsible for the smooth delivery of the initiative over the next five years.
He will be working closely with Mike Barey, who is leading the Plan A initiative, and Stuart Rose.
"My first task is to get a handle on the plan and to quickly get the business aligned to delivering it, which is the top of everyone's agenda," said Hordle. He has worked for Marks & Spencer for the past 21 years. After starting out in store management, he progressed to buying and category management.
In his previous role Hordle was in charge of the retailer's health strategy for food. This job has now been split between existing M&S staff.
M&S's Plan A is a five-year, 100-point plan to help combat climate change by reducing waste, safeguarding natural resources, and trading more ethically.
The retailer plans to become carbon-neutral by 2012, boost its energy efficiency by 25% and to start powering all its stores with renewable energy.
