Iceland says it has enjoyed a doubling of expected sales this morning, due to Morrisons’ technical issues.

The supermarket said it was “inundated with last-minute orders” and experienced three times as many website visitors as normal “as Morrisons let millions down”.

This morning, a technical glitch at Morrisons meant its More Card loyalty scheme customers were unable to access promotions and discounts. The issues also affected the Morrisons website, click & collect orders, and home deliveries.

Iceland claimed the doubling in sales was directly linked to a “very un-merry Morrisons cancelled Christmas”.

The most-ordered item in stores and on the Iceland website was turkey, with sales rising 200%, and increases were also seen in orders of stuffing, pigs in blankets and Christmas pudding, the supermarket said.

“What a morning, sales of our Christmas produce rocketed and we were more than happy to oblige and make sure Christmas wasn’t ruined for families who switched to us,” an Iceland spokesman said.

“Like Santa, we always deliver, come rain, shine or snow. Oh, and thanks Morrisons for the extra orders, Merry Christmas.”

Unlike many rival supermarkets where Christmas delivery slots must be selected weeks in advance, the Iceland website is currently offering options for same-day delivery and delivery on Christmas Eve.

“For anyone else that’s been let down or is in need of last-minute Christmas items, our brilliant staff and delectable produce is available and, don’t worry, we won’t mess up your order,” the spokesman added.
