Image-recognition powered shopping trolley startup Imagr has appointed former CEO of Coop Denmark Peter Hogsted as its chief commercial officer.
Hogsted spent seven years at Coop Denmark, before retiring from the role at the end of 2020.
Prior to Coop, Hogsted had been international CEO at B&Q and Screwfix owner Kingfisher, leading its businesses in Russia, China, Poland and Turkey. He was also UK CEO at Ikea.
The appointment comes after Imagr in October welcomed former Sainsbury’s chairman David Tyler, who was at the supermarket from 2009 to 2019, as chair of its board.
Imagr produces trolleys and baskets equipped with image recognition technology, which recognise an item as a shopper places it in, and adds it to a virtual basket, which they can pay for using their phone.
The company was set to partner with a British supermarket chain to go live in store in the first half of this year, it said.
“Peter has deep roots in retail innovation that are invaluable to Imagr at this important stage of growth,” said Imagr CEO William Chomley. “He understands how retailers operate and sees the huge opportunity that Imagr presents to streamline operations and change how the world shops.”
Hogsted started work at the company this week.
“Imagr’s approach to automating the checkout is what really sold me on joining the business,” he said. “It is one of the most exciting advances in the retail market. I have participated in the industry as it has gradually changed to embrace digital technology and I know it’s now ready for the next evolution.
“Imagr presents an amazing opportunity for retailers to revolutionise how the world shops and how they do business,” he added.
