And, as further proof that the independent sector can rival the multiples on choice, quality and price, the nominal value of its Grocer 33 basket (see illustration left) was less than one major multiple and not far off a couple of the others. There were plenty of non-food items available instore, plus an impressive array of bedding plants on sale at the entrance. Staff were attentive, polite and dressed in a distinctive green uniform.

Fresh mince is not sold in small packs from the chiller but available by weight from the fresh meat counter. Tetley teabags were offered with 50% extra free, while Müller Fruit Corners were half price at 19p each.
Jempson's, which began life in 1935 as a family baker shop, now covers 12,000 sq ft with car parking, Jet forecourt and a restaurant. Jempson's joined wholesaler Nisa-Today's in 1982 and was the country's first independent store to install laser checkouts.
