Kosher brand Providence Deli has launched a new range of dippers into 47 Tesco stores today.
The snack-on-the-go pots contain 100g of houmous or tahini tip, topped with a 30g container of pretzels.
“While we did consider carrots or celery, we needed something that would keep its crunch and have a reasonable shelf life. The pretzels are based on a classic Israeli bagel chip and they go brilliantly with dips so it was a natural fit,” said company MD Adam Bass. “We have great quality houmous that is easily on a par with anything else in the UK market, presented in a new easy-to-eat format.”
Capitalising on the ongoing popularity of houmous, the product is also vegan-friendly and high protein, with both Dipper varieties containing 10g of protein or more per serving.
Bass realised the gap in the UK market for the snack-sized product while travelling in Israel. “Currently if you want to buy houmous or tahini, you’re looking at a minimum of 200g+ serving made for sharing, which is not suitable for on-the-go individual eating. The single-serving format of our Dippers with their own carrier makes them a perfect, healthy snack.”
Key eating occasions for the product are as a mid-morning or teatime savoury snack, providing a nutritious alternative to crisps, cake and biscuits. “We’re hoping for a large slice of the food-to-go market, which could be picnic, lunchbox or a working audience,” added Bass.
Providence Deli Dippers is currently exclusive to Tesco, but the company hopes to gain listings in a range of retailers and foodservice in the near future, with “a number of companies already expressing interest. Foodservice in particular is desperate for healthy on-the-go snacks for school and travel.”
