Lidl plans to roll out in-store bakeries to its entire UK estate if its latest trial proves a hit.
The discounter began trialling a fresh bakery concept from a store in Newcastle in October 2011, selling freshly baked bread and cakes.
A spokeswoman for Lidl said it had already increased the number of bakeries to 340 of its 600 UK stores but was now targeting blanket coverage. “We have been trialling in-store bakeries in several UK regions over the past 12 months to gauge customer feedback,” she said.
“So far, they have been a huge hit and, if the next batch proves to be as successful this year, we will roll them out nationwide. They bring an enticing smell to the aisles.”
