Lidl has installed 'smart meters' in 95% of its UK stores to help it cut gas and electricity consumption.
The discounter has worked with British Gas to install the meters, which will enable it to keep track of energy consumption.
"The smart meters will also enable Lidl to spot faulty chillers," said a British Gas spokeswoman.
Lidl is trialling the scheme in the UK and will roll it out to the rest of its estate around the world if it proves successful.
"The system will positively affect both the efficiency of our energy usage and the environment," said a Lidl spokeswoman.
