Supermarket customers will soon be able to buy lottery tickets at the checkout rather than only through a dedicated kiosk.

Tesco is the first retailer to sign up to the scheme launched by the lottery operator Camelot although it is expected that other chains will also take part in the joint venture.

Camelot believe the scheme will attract new players to the game and boost sales which have risen for the first time in six years.

Ticket sales in the main draw fell by 4% last year however a 30% rise in sales for other games boosted total sales to £88m.

Other initiatives are also being considered by Camelot including allowing players to buy tickets through mobile phones and expanding the European lottery draw EuroMillions.
