Makro Cash & Carry is set to revamp eight depots this year in an attempt to reverse declining sales and pre-tax losses of nearly £20m.

The chain this week unveiled a "multi-million pound" customer investment programme, which will include the refurbishment of eight of its 30 depots and a rejig of its head office team to create new customer management and offer management departments.

Work will start on 29 June to revamp its Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol and Glasgow depots, while makeovers of its Croydon, Park Royal, Cardiff and Washington depots will start on 24 August, with completion expected by the end of the year.

Walk-in cool rooms for fresh produce are being introduced to every depot in the estate.

"These proposals follow a series of initiatives in recent months to help us achieve our mission of being the first choice cash & carry wholesaler in the UK," said Makro UK MD Hannes Floto. "We're very clear about our future and we're working extremely hard to ensure we continually put the customer first."

However, Makro admitted that creating two new departments, which will both be headed by board directors, meant there was the possibility that a "small number" of roles would be made redundant. It refused to say how many staff were at risk, but said it was holding meetings with affected staff.

Parellel to the refit programme, Makro has hired Belfast-based maintenance and installation company Contract Services to install energy-efficient equipment in its Southampton, Exeter and Bristol depots.

"We are working with Contract Services, but this is separate to our Future Stores Programme," said Floto. "The project is to install energy-saving illumination concepts in some of our stores - which will improve the shopping experience for our customers."

Makro is to close its depots in Coventry, Swansea and Wolverhampton tomorrow with the loss of 378 jobs.
