Makro Cash & Carry is trialling a delivery service, The Grocer has learned.
The ongoing trials are understood to be from eight depots, where Makro has recruited delivery customer consultants, in Glasgow, Washington, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and Park Royal.
Makro is also recruiting delivery managers nationwide and in the job ad reveals that the delivery service is for "new customers".
The delivery managers will be expected to "oversee every aspect of your store's delivery operation, managing your team and ensuring the highest availability and accuracy of picking and delivery, while also looking ahead to implement improvements wherever possible".
Makro's parent Metro Group launched a delivery service in Germany last year following a successful trial in an effort to attract new customers from the hotel, restaurant and catering sectors.
The German trial was profitable and attracted more than 3,000 new customers in its initial phase, it claimed.
Deliveries have since been launched in Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic and Russia, and Metro has pledged to roll out deliveries to other countries.
The move makes Makro the latest cash & carry wholesaler to launch into delivered. Last month Bestway Cash & Carry, which has been trialling deliveries to independent restaurants, takeaways and pubs from some of its depots for nearly a year, said it planned to roll the service out to all of its 54 depots.
However, not all wholesalers have been won over by delivered. London-based Dhamecha Cash & Carry closed the delivered service it ran from its Enfield depot in 2008 and last September said that it would not deliver any goods in the future.
Meanwhile, Makro has joined forces with national food redistribution charity FareShare. Makro will provide food that is still fit for consumption to the charity, as well as promoting the charity in its depots.
