Ken McWhinney, the deputy managing director and group corporate development director of Spar’s Northern Ireland wholesaler Henderson Wholesale, is to retire.
A spokeswoman for Henderson Group said that McWhinney, who joined in 1976 after 11 years at M&S, would retire on January 31.
McWhinney began his career with Henderson Group as general manager for its company-owned stores.
He held this role for two years before being
appointed retail director for the business.
In 1978 he left Henderson to take up the role of CEO of the Belfast Co-operative Society. After five years he returned to Henderson in the position of sales director.
He has also held the role of sales and marketing director. Henderson Group said that during the past 20 years and in the course of a long and illustrious career, McWhinney had played a key part in the successful growth of the group.
This included the successful development of a number of franchises in Northern Ireland including Spar, EuroSpar, Vivo and Vivoxtra.
Paddy Doody, who is currently sales director for Henderson Wholesale, will become sales and marketing director after McWhinney’s retirement.
Doody will take over McWhinney’s responsibilities for the group marketing function at Henderson Wholesale.
