Merchant Gourmet has expanded its chestnuts range into healthier snacking.
It has launched a line of Snacking Chestnuts, comprising “bite-sized” chestnuts, which are “simply roasted and lightly sprinkled with seasoning” (rsp: £1.99/35g).
They are lightly salted and weigh in at 65 calories per pack. The NPD is also a source of fibre.
Merchant Gourmet has also launched what it claims is the UK’s “first-ever ambient ready-to-bake chestnut stuffing” (rsp: £2.50/200g).
The plant-based and gluten-free innovation was intended to “eliminate Christmas stress for time-poor Brits”, said the brand.
Both products have already rolled into Sainsbury’s and will roll into other retailers in October.
They would help “encourage the nation to enjoy the traditional, versatile chestnut”, said Merchant Gourmet.
Merchant Gourmet MD Richard Peake said the brand had “always been champions of the chestnut”.
“As the leading UK provider for over 25 years”, the innovations were developed as “a direct response to ongoing consumer demand for new and exciting ways to enjoy the traditional fruit”, he said.
The festive period was “a key moment for chestnut sales in the UK” and the new launches offered “delicious, plant-based options for all occasions”, Peake added.
It comes after the brand has made concerted efforts to enter new categories over recent months. In June, for instance, it entered the frozen market with a pulses and grains duo.
