A North East artisan food and drink retailer is eyeing expansion and hopes to begin exporting outside of the UK for the first time by the end of the year.

Newcastle-based Mmm…Glug… currently operates from a 600 sq ft location in the city’s Grainger Market. It plans to offer a click & collect service and eventually set up a mail order web service selling into Europe when it relocates to a two-storey 1,500 sq ft shop in a couple of months.

Established in 2008, the business sources high-quality produce from around the world and is often name-checked in books by celebrity chefs including Thomasina Miers.

Simone Clarkin, who runs the business with husband Ian, told The Grocer there were also plans to run ticketed events including “food and drink tasting tutorials and cooking demonstrations”.

“This is a very exciting time for us, moving into our own shop and having the freedom that comes with that is something we have wanted for some time,” she said. “The Grainger Market has been a fantastic place to be, but we are delighted with the start of our new chapter.

“Our ethos is that we source high-quality food and drink from independent producers wherever they are in the world, and we strive to build long-term relationships with both our customers and suppliers. We do stock products from the North East, but not just because they are from this region - we source from Italy, France, America, we look across the whole world to get the quality we know our customers will want.”
