Morrisons has introduced three previously frozen seafood lines to its fish counters in a bid to keep prices down.
Madagascan tiger prawns, raw jumbo king prawns and squid tubes hit stores last week. “The products are shipped from around the world and importing them fresh would result in prices our customers would not want to pay,” said a spokesman, adding they were clearly labelled.
Morrisons has to date only stocked fresh seafood although some of its smoked fish such as cod and haddock have been frozen at sea. “Using high-quality previously frozen fish for smoking takes the pressure off when buying fresh due to availability,” the spokesman said.
