Morrisons is set to roll-out contactless payment at all stores by the summer.
The retailer said this week that it had allocated more than £4m over the next three months to upgrade 15,500 payment points across its 514 supermarkets and superstores and 161 convenience outlets.
Morrisons has calculated “touch-and-go” payments will save each customer 10 seconds when they pay for their shopping on all transactions of, initially, up to £20. This limit is to be increased to £30 later in the year. It expects queues will be reduced, especially during peak periods.
“From Summer 2015 all of our payment points across the country will have been upgraded to accept contactless payments. It will make shopping faster and easier for our shoppers,” said group retail director Martyn Fletcher.
“This is another improvement in technology at Morrisons that will improve our customers’ shopping trip.”
Tami Hargreaves, Barclaycard chief operating officer for digital consumer payments, the company supplying the technology to Morrisons, said: “The appetite to pay contactlessly has increased sharply over the past year as consumers increasingly value the speed and ease of touch-and-go payments.”
