Morrisons has revealed it has saved 100 tonnes of food from going to waste since becoming the first supermarket to partner with the Too Good to Go app.
The retailer, which signed up with the app last year, said it had been used to redistribute the equivalent of 100,000 meals in the past 12 months.
The app is designed to prevent food past its best-before date but safe to eat from being thrown away.
It is available in the majority of Morrisons stores nationwide, where customers can download the app and select a local store to purchase a bag of unsold fruit, veg, deli and bakery worth at least £10 for just over £3.
“We’re making good food affordable for everyone and working with the Too Good to Go app also reduces food waste. Customers love it because they save money and the environment at same time,” said Steven Butts, head of corporate responsibility at Morrisons.
Paschalis Loucaides, UK country manager at Too Good To Go, said: “Working with Morrisons has proven just how impactful collaboration is to reduce food waste.
“By saving 100,000 meals in the past year alone, we have been able to ensure food is eaten and enjoyed instead of wasted. Our users have loved rescuing the Morrisons Magic Bags and I know, together, we can continue to make big strides in the fight against food waste in the months and years to come.”
