Supermarkets are coming under pressure from MPs to further develop ethical and sustainable purchasing policies when buying fish.
A cross-party group of MPs is urging all supermarkets to adopt “sustainable procurement polices”. Their call has come in a Commons motion headed by Labour backbencher Alan Simpson who warned: “We’re over-fishing seas in completely unsustainable ways.”

The MP also praised Waitrose’s work on developing procurement policies.
He added: “As public awareness about the dangers to fish stocks grows, customers will start voting with their shopping baskets, demanding supermarkets take a lead in this issue,” added Simpson.
