Tom Nolan, purchasing director for Irish supermarket chain Superquinn, is leaving the company after just a year in the job.

Nolan, a former Tesco Ireland executive, joined the 21-store chain shortly after its E420m purchase from Senator Feargal Quinn and family by Select Retail Holdings, an Irish business consortium, early last year.

He has now opted not to renew his contract for personal reasons and is stepping down early next month, but has given no indication so far of what he plans to do next.

According to Simon Burke, chief executive of Superquinn, the process of recruiting a successor "is already well under way and an announcement will be made shortly".

Burke also paid tribute to Nolan's "commitment and contribution over the past year" and said that he had played a key role in reshaping the Superquinn purchasing model.

Meanwhile, Superquinn has appointed Fleishman-Hillard to handle its corporate and consumer public relations, a role that was previously filled by Drury Communications.

Fleishman-Hillard was previously PR adviser to the Musgrave group for 12 years. It stepped aside recently when the Cork-based wholesaler decided to put the contract out to tender.
