An online grocer specialising in supplying hard-to-find British products to expats in Europe has established a distribution site in the Netherlands to bypass Brexit-induced import issues.
British Corner Shop’s new 125,000 sq ft unit is the company’s first European warehouse and will serve as a distribution centre for customers across Europe and beyond.
The company said it had enjoyed a surge in demand across Europe over the past year, with Covid travel restrictions “meaning that many Brits have been left unable to travel back to the UK for extensive periods of time”.
British Corner Shop – which stocks more than 6,000 SKUs including hundreds of Waitrose products as an official partner – had been forced to “significantly” reduce its range through the Brexit transition period.
“The opening of our new warehouse means that we’re able to increase the product range available to our European customers whilst also significantly reducing our delivery timescales to EU countries,” said head of marketing Jon Farrar.
“We’re thrilled to be able to once again serve our loyal customers, and in return we have ensured that all European Union orders will be free of any additional customs fees or duties,” he added.
The new facility is equipped to hold an extensive selection of items for the Bristol-based business that are not currently readily accessible in other supermarkets across Europe.
British Corner Shop said establishing the site was a “crucial step” in its growth strategy.
“We have seen an influx of customers shopping online for both essentials and nostalgic items and the expansion of our warehouse space into Europe will have a massive impact on the speed and efficiency of our operation,” Farrar added.
