Palmer & Harvey said it will deliver significant improvements to the time it takes to make deliveries after upgrading its supply chain systems.
The wholesaler has issued 950 handheld PDA devices to drivers throughout its fleet with a number of new features, which it claimed are the most advanced in the wholesale industry.
The devices support a number of time-saving features to reduce time spent at drop, travel times between drop-offs and simplify the proof of delivery process.
Currently, drivers have to manage several variables including time-critical delivery windows and confirmation of performance and service levels. The overhaul has reduced complexity and added advanced satnav technology and improved network connectivity.
P&H now has better tracking ability preventing drivers from making unnecessary off-route trips, and improved re-routing with real-time traffic updates.
P&H would begin the transition to paperless distribution later next year and all asset management and delivery sign-off would be supported by the new technology, said group operations director Mark Leonard.
Tasked with transforming the P&H supply chain after his appointment six months ago, Leonard has implemented the PDAs as part of wider plan with 30-40 new initiatives to improve operational efficiency.
“Our drivers have to take out a high degree of paperwork to manage assets and our aim is to minimise complexity and streamline our operations,” said Leonard. “What we want to give our customers is the paperless facility and the opportunity to access the self-serve portal and allow them to check when their delivery is due to arrive. We’re here to provide the best possible service at the best possible cost.”
