Pork Farms has dipped its toe in the vegan category with the launch of the first meat-free ‘pork’ pie.
The entirely plant-based snack, developed by Addo Food Group, is made with pea protein rather than the traditional pork filling. This comes alongside white pepper, ginger, onion powder, nutmeg and a blend of fresh herbs and spices, wrapped in the manufacturer’s hot water crust pastry.
Each 65g pie contains 3g of saturated fat, 0.69g of salt, 6.5g of protein and is 247 calories.
It is available in selected Asda branches at £1.65 for two.
The addition to Pork Farm’s lineup comes as it pushes to meet demand for flexitarian snacking options, and to signal a move towards a healthier snacking range.
“We’re incredibly excited to be just one of only a few brands to introduce pea protein to our product range,” said Mike Holton, brand manager at Pork Farms.
“Our innovation chefs have developed this recipe to emulate one of the nation’s favourite snacks and we are delighted to be providing an alternative to flexitarian customers, while also expanding our product range to appeal to vegan shoppers who are looking for more choice, who can now enjoy a pork pie with the same textures and flavours as our traditional snack. When it comes to plant-based food, consumers shouldn’t have to sacrifice great taste.”
