A new prebiotic product is being touted as the next weapon in the fight for better digestive health.
Aimed primarily at manufacturers of functional foods, Promovita GOS is made from milk sugar and helps promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut, according to Promovita, a partnership between Fayrefield Foods and First Milk.
Promovita would be well-suited to suppliers of infant formula, dairy and drinks, according to Fayrefield. Trials had revealed Promovita to be rich in galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), which regulate the intestinal immune system and help battle infection, it said. The soluble pale yellow syrup was low in calories and possessed properties similar to dietary fibre, said Fayrefield’s Theresa Kerr. “It gives a smooth and creamy texture to dairy products, improving the appeal of fat-reduced or fat free dairy products.”
