Budgens claimed a first this week through the extension of its prepared salad range with a topped and trimmed Onion Duet' prepack which contains a red spring onion called Burgundy. The 100g packs are priced at 65p.
Steve Normington, senior produce buyer, believes this is the first time the variety, which originates from a Dutch/Italian breeding programme, has been grown in the UK. Budgens has been conducting trials with its supplier, Lincs based Cobgate Farm.
"Burgundy is milder and sweeter than a normal salad onion and can be used in stir-frys and other recipes as well as salads," he says. "We are confident that it will go down extremely well."
