Asda has picked up where it left off, posting the lowest total in The Grocer 33 price survey again. It was the second victory in a row for Asda, which had a five-week winning streak broken up by Tesco a fortnight ago.
Asda's bill for the items on our shopping list came it at £45.90.
In a similar performance to last week's, Asda managed to post the absolute lowest price on five of our 33 items, but matched the competition's lowest price on 25 others.
Sainsbury's continued its comeback on our price survey, finishing in second place this time. That followed a similar improvement last week to third place.
Sainsbury's total of £47.76 was 4% higher than Asda's. Sainsbury's had the lowest price on just two items, Doritos corn chips, which it offered at 50% off this week and Heinz WeightWatchers ready meals. Sainsbury's also matched the joint lowest price for 24 other items on our shopping list.
Tesco dropped back to third place this week at £48.11, or 4.8% higher than Asda.
Morrisons remained in fourth place for the second week in a row at £49.04, or 6.8% more expensive than Asda.
While Morrisons did not have a large number of price changes in this week's basket, it is active on the promotional front.
One mystery shopper reported that the Morrisons she visited had a sign informing customers that there were more than 150 bogof deals available in store that day.
Somerfield and Waitrose also held at fifth and sixth place, with totals of £55.27 and £56.86 respectively.
Looking at price changes across the item in this week's basket, two items had price changes in two stores each. The price of McCain hash browns was increased by 16p at Waitrose, taking it to £1.25, while Morrisons put it up 20p to £1.19.
Elsewhere, Somerfield put the price of Scotch eggs up 8p to £0.83, while Asda reduced them to £0.74.
Waitrose also had a price change in the dry grocery category this week. It reduced the price of own label peanut butter by 9p, to £0.69.
