Reynolds Catering Supplies has launched a driver development scheme in response to the industry-wide shortage.
Training on the wholesaler’s fleet of 7.5 tonne vehicles and Class 2 HGVs is provided while applicants complete a number of staged assessments throughout the six-month scheme.
The programme, which was designed to provide a pipeline of skilled multi-drop drivers, is open to external applicants as well as candidates already working in the Reynolds business.
The training will cost Reynolds about £6,000 per driver and they will be required to remain with the business for two years.
Reynolds has also made significant investments in improving working conditions and the overall remuneration package for drivers, in order to encourage employee retention as well as to attract new recruits.
“The shortage of drivers has been a significant challenge to our business in recent years, particularly given the growth of our company, but we believe that the driver development scheme is a fundamental element of our solution,” said Reynold operations director Paul Pegg.
“The very fragile nature of fresh produce, combined with the demanding nature of customers’ requirements, dictates that our drivers need appropriate training. Therefore, our high standard of customer service is not compatible with agency drivers or temporary staff.”
