Sainsbury’s launched its Smartcharge EV network in January 2024

Sainsbury’s has partnered business payment provider AllStar, as it continues to expand its Smartcharge electric vehicle charging network.

Now, EV drivers who possess an AllStar charge pass will be able to pay for their charge at EV hubs at an initial 58 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide. They’ll also be able to redeem Nectar Points when they charge, if they’re a member of Sainsbury’s Nectar loyalty scheme.

Self-described as a “business roaming partner” AllStar provides fuel and EV expense cards and services for business employees travelling in company cars. AllStar and Sainsbury’s already have an existing partnership across Sainsbury’s petrol forecourts.

“We are delighted to be expanding our extensive partnership with Sainsbury’s to now include EV charging in conjunction with their exciting Smart Charge initiative,” said Paul Holland, managing director for UK/ANZ Fleet at Corpay, AllStar’s parent company.

“Our focus is to provide the best payment solution for our customers, whether that’s fuel, EV charging on the road or at home.”

The partnership is the latest addition to Sainsbury’s rapidly expanding inhouse EV charging network, which launched in January this year. Sainsbury’s aims to open charging hubs in the carparks of 100 of its stores by the end of the year.

In June, Sainsbury’s began offering loyalty points to SmartCharge customers, enabling Nectar members to accrue points that can be redeemed in store every time they charge.

“The new partnership between Smart Charge and AllStar represents a fantastic new milestone for our EV charging business,” said Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Director of Property, Procurement & EV Ventures

“From today, AllStar customers have access to our 24/7, convenient and reliable ultra-rapid charging hubs. Customers can make use of Sainsbury’s services such as cafés during their short wait, with the added personal reward of earning Nectar points while they charge.

“This is a critical next step in our ambition to make EV charging simple and accessible to all, giving a whole new sector of EV fleet drivers easy access to our network of over 475 bays at more than 58 locations up and down the country.”
