Sainsbury’s has opened one of the most energy-efficient supermarkets in the country.
The 72,000 sq ft store, in King’s Lynn, opened yesterday and features eco-initiatives such as 1,000 solar panels on its roof to generate electricity, ground source heat pumps under the car park to heat the store, rainwater harvesting and natural refrigeration.
It has also created 400 jobs for the local community.
Sainsbury’s has an environmental target of reducing its carbon emissions by 30% by 2020.
“We are excited about opening the doors to our customers and showing them all the new things Sainsbury’s has to offer,” said store manager Chris Pardoe.
“The store provides a wide range of our popular Tu clothing and homeware, just in time for Christmas shopping. It’s also been built to reduce its impact on the environment.”
