Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco are cutting the price of fuel at all their filling stations by 2ppl.
Sainsbury’s led the way on Thursday morning by announcing the reduction in the cost of petrol and diesel at all of its 309 sites.
Izzy Hexter, Sainsbury’s fuel buying manager, said: “We hope this will bring a little bit of sunshine to millions of motorists braving the rain over the next few days.
“At Sainsbury’s we always aim to provide our customers with fantastic prices and great quality across every one of our products and services, so we hope this price drop will help them keep costs down over the summer - whatever the weather.”
Morrisons, with 333 sites, and Tesco, with 500, said it was also cutting fuel prices by 2ppl.
Asda said it is also cutting prices by 2ppl.
Asda senior buying manager for petrol Dave Tyrer said: “Asda is well known for having the lowest fuel prices around and we’ve cut our already market leading price further – by up to 2p - to mean our customers won’t pay more than 110.7ppl for petrol or diesel at any of our 307 petrol stations nationwide.”
The latest round of reductions comes after the price of Brent crude oil tumbled from $56 in April to $44 a barrel last week - the lowest it has been since November.
Fuel prices are at their lowest since January - with motorists paying 5ppl less for petrol and 3ppl less on diesel than in February.
Roger Fogg, Morrisons services director, said: “We’ll always make sure we have the cheapest fuel prices in the area.”
Peter Cattell, Tesco fuel director, added: “We know customers will be making plans to enjoy the British summer, so we’re delighted to be dropping the price of petrol and diesel by up to two pence per litre at all of our 500 petrol filing stations. This reduction will mean millions of customers save money by shopping at Tesco.”
It is the fifth time in the last six months that motorists have seen a cut in the price of fuel at the pumps.
But despite the continued decline, the cost of petrol and diesel is 7ppl and 9ppl, respectively, higher than this time last year.
