The closure of pubs and restaurants has seen a major drop-off in demand for foodservice players
Sainsbury’s has linked up with foodservice giant Brakes in a bid to fill supermarket shelves.
The collaboration looks like one of the first tie-ups between a major supermarket and a large foodservice operator. The mults have been rocked by unprecedented demand over the past few weeks, while the enforced closure of pubs and restaurants has seen a major drop-off in demand for foodservice players.
Sainsbury’s is currently selling catering-sized packs of Brakes own-label food in 10 stores in Kent. The Grocer understands the tie-up is limited to that region currently but the parties are looking to see if it could lead to a wider rollout.
“This partnership is helping us meet the current high customer demand for key grocery products in Kent,” said Sainsbury’s spokesman.
The Brakes products on sale include tinned tomatoes and baked beans, which are among the hardest hit by the recent coronavirus-related panic buying.
In these challenging times it’s great that the food industry is pulling together 💪

We are proudly supporting @sainsburys in Kent currently getting vital supplies to people. Big thanks to Brakes and Sainsbury’s colleagues who have worked incredibly hard to make this possible 👏 pic.twitter.com/qUPycPN3Ed
