School of Wok, the Asian cookery school and kitchen utensil brand, is making its debut in grocery with a bao bun kit – a first for the UK, according to the business.
Capitalising on the street food craze, the School of Wok Bao Bun Kit (rsp: £3.49) began rollout this week to more than 300 Tesco stores. Two variants, Black Pepper and Barbecue, comprise flour mix, pickling salts, dry rub and glaze along with step-by-step instructions on creating four to six bao buns in 30 minutes. Consumers are encouraged to fill their buns with protein and vegetables.
“At School of Wok we’ve become known as the UK’s Asian cookery hub, and we believe the time is now right for us to bring our flair for demystifying oriental cookery into the grocery sector,” said the brand’s founder and head chef Jeremy Pang.
The bao bun was a “key trend in the thriving Asian restaurant sector”, he added, and would “bring something completely new to the supermarket aisles”.
Pang set up School of Wok in 2009 in London with cookery coach Nev Leaning, with the intention of making Asian cooking “accessible to all”. The business produces a range of cooking woks and utensils designed for creating far eastern cuisine.
