Waitrose is stocking a selenium-enriched bread from Nutrilaw.
The reformulated loaf goes on shelf in the multiple this month, and has been developed to contain less salt and a lower Glycaemic Index (GI) than the previous version.
The selenium, which is reputed to help maintain a healthy heart and immune system, is incorporated into the bread by adding it to the soil as the wheat plants grow rather than being included at the manufacturing stage.
Nutrilaw claims the process is a world technological first and makes it easier for the body to absorb selenium.
Nutrilaw managing director Mark Law said: “Nutrilaw enriched bread has developed a strong following among Waitrose customers who are convinced of the benefits of maintaining the recommended daily intake of selenium.
“Now, with our new wholemeal loaf we are offering the extra benefits of lower salt and lower GI level.”
