Newspaper and magazine wholesaler Smiths News has won an exclusive contract to distribute the Metro newspaper across London and South East England.
The new contract, to deliver 200 million copies of the free newspaper a year, will start in February 2014 and runs for five years.
“Today’s announcement clearly demonstrates our ability to extend the scope of Smiths News’ activities by winning one of the largest free-title distribution contracts in the UK,” said Smiths News CEO Mark Cashmore.
“We are pleased with early progress in FY2014 and we continue to trade in line with our expectations.”
The win comes on the same day rival Menzies Distribution admitted trading continued to be tough.
Menzies warned “disappointing returns from ancillary revenues, sticker collections and weaker than forecast seasonal sales within the marketing services business are expected to impact the second-half result”.
